If you could humiliate your boss on TV, would you? Jeremy Paxman would!!

March 2, 2010

Jeremy Paxman NewsnightMost of us at one point or another have dreamed or fantasised about having the opportunity to right some wrongs with our boss in a public arena. In reality the majority of us, when push came to shove, would bottle it for fear of repercussions and recrimination later on in a darkened corridor!!

If you happen to be a TV presenter and interviewer with a public broadcasting organisation, which prides itself on giving a fair, balanced and unbiased overview on all issues, without fear or favour, then you take the licence and opportunity to aggressively put the boss in his place. So it was that Newsnight’s Jeremy Paxman was able to interrogate and bully Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC.

On Tuesday night’s edition of Newsnight in a studio debate on the proposed closure of BBC 6 Music and The Asian Network, the barristerial Jeremy Paxman seized the opportunity to cross examine and belittle Mark Thompson, and by so doing expose the lack of strategy, planning and organisation by the BBC heirearchy.

Paxman was at his belligerent best, as he exposed the flakiness of the decision making within upper echelons at the BBC. Most of us have witnessed this particular newshound doggedly grabbing the bone of truth and baying at the blood of misguided, disingenuous, hypocritical politicians as they capitulated under interrogation. However to see him applying the same mocking approach and tone to his boss for incompetency over wasted millions on building projects that have gone over budget, was a joy to behold.

Sometimes Jeremy Paxman over eggs the pudding, overdoing the aggressive questioning. Sometimes he is tongue in cheek, and sometimes just plain theatrical. But what he is always, is a custodian of truth and integrity, and his boss Mark Thompson should be proud of the Newsnight anchorman’s unflinching, brave and impartial questioning.

In the current economic climate at the BBC it is highly unlikely that Paxman will receive a pay rise – but he deserves it. In the world of political commentators and journalists, along with John Humphreys he stands tall like a skyscraper presiding over the island of Manhattan.
